Intensive Classes

6 Session of Intensive Beginner Course

Pottery Kick Off:

Level: Beginner 

No previous experience is necessary! You will be introduced to methods & techniques using demonstrations, explanations and reference to examples. We will start at the very beginning: from wedging and preparing clay, centring on the electric wheel, create basic form with your hand and throwing techniques. During the course you will make: functional and traditional forms (cylinders, bowls, cups, plates and vases) and other more playful and fun pieces.

 

Our teacher and staff will support and guide you through the duration of the course. Two pieces of your work can be fired and glazed during this course. The main focus in a course is on techniques, the process and practicing. If you wish to fired more then there will be extra charges based on size.

  • Session 1: Basic Wheel Throwing

What you will learn:

  • Clay preparation - wedge in a proper manner

  • Centering the clay

  • Throwing bowls and cylinders

  • Teacher will expect you to make at least 2-3 pieces with 400-500 grams of clay

  • Session 2: Basic Trimming

What you will learn:

  • Tips on centering and securing leather hard pieces on the wheel

  • Technique of trimming and refining work made

  • Session 3: Basic Hand Building Techniques

What you will learn:

  • Basic Pinch, Slab and Coil technique, Technique of trimming and refining work made

  • Teacher will give you some ideas and tips on how to use these three techniques to add artistic and functional value on your pottery work

  • Session 4: Improver Wheel Throwing

What you will learn:

  • How to improve your centering and cylinder shape

  • How to make plates Create different shapes using tools

  • Session 5: Trimming & Carving

What you will learn:

  • How to improve your trimming skill by making a different kind of curves and foots

  • Learn how to make and attached handle on mugs

  • Learn how to do basic decoration

  • Session 6: Basic Glazing

What you will learn:

  • Dipping Technique

  • Brushing Technique

  • Pouring/Dripping Technique

Form in Motion:

4 sessions of Intermediate Wheel Throwing Course

Level: Intermediate

Take your pottery skills to the next level in this focused 4-session course designed for students comfortable with centering and pulling clay on the wheel. We’ll refine your technique, explore new shapes, and introduce more advanced forms like bottles and closed shapes. The final session will focus entirely on trimming and finishing your work with care.

  • Focus on wall control, even thickness, and form consistency

  • Practice throwing matched cylinders

  • Use of calipers and measuring tools

  • Session 2: Shape Exploration

  • Throwing bowls and wider open forms

  • Managing shape expansion without collapse

  • Rim and foot aesthetics Intro to trimming considerations for open forms

  • Session 3: Closed Form

What you will learn:

  • Throwing closed shapes such as bottles, vases, or bud forms

  • Techniques for collaring, neck shaping, and air capture

  • Planning forms for visual flow and volume

  • Session 4: Trimming & Finishing

What you will learn:

  • Trimming for balance and beauty (feet, curves, thickness)

  • Trimming closed forms and bowls

  • Finishing touches: detailing, texture, and surface refinement Optional: adding simple handles or attachments

Clay Foundations:

Discover the joy of clay in our beginner friendly handbuilding program at Mrs Potter. This course covers the fundamental techniques of pottery pinching, slab building, coiling and glazing while giving you time to practice and explore in our open studio.

What you will learn: ​Learn clay basics (wedging, joining, moisture control) and create your first pinch pot bowl or cup.

  • Session 2: Slab Building

What you will learn: Roll, cut, and join slabs to make trays, tiles, or small box forms.

  • Session 3: Coiling

What you will learn: ​Build larger, rounder forms with coils (like a planter or vase) and practice smoothing and shaping.

  • Session 4: Glazing & Finishing

What you will learn: ​Understand glaze basics, try different application methods, and glaze your bisque-fired work.
